MOTHER INDIA - 21st CENTURY REMIX

Mother India, 21st Century remix, KALA PHOOL

In an exciting partnership with KALA PHOOL, The Drum have co-commissioned MOTHER INDIA 21st CENTURY REMIX (MI21).

MI21 is a dynamic live audio/visual project to re-score and re-visualize the groundbreaking 'tour-de-force' of Indian cinematic history 'Mother India'.

Winner of the Oscar for best Foreign Film in 1957, the film came to symbolise the post-colonial Indian psyche interpreted through the ambitions, struggles, compassion and sheer will to survive of the central 'Mother' character Radha.

Profoundly influential, Mother India was lauded for its stunning cinematography, indelible soundtrack and powerfully dramatic storyline.

KALA PHOOL has brought the film together with one of the world's leading Turntablists and electronic composers; British Asian DJ Tigerstyle (former World DMC and ITF champion) to reinterpret the score through a unique live electronic performance to commemorate India and Pakistan's Independence.

Tigerstyle uses turntables and electronics, accompanied by the prodigious talents of Cellist, Matt Constantine and Drummer David Shaw, to present the film for a contemporary audience.

Experimental, yet true to the source, the film has been specially recut and remixed exclusively for this performance.

An extroadinary film and an extraordinary reimagining.

So you can experience this amazing work, we are presenting MI21 during its developmental stages at a club night in Birmingham, and in a theatre space in London.

Later in the year MI21 will return home to The Drum in all its splendor for a prestigious launch before embarking on a national tour.

Film re-edit by The Renderghost.

I recently completed some editing and design work on a project managed by KALA PHOOL as part of the Decibel Performing Arts Showcase 2007. The project aims to re-score the classic 1957 Bollywood film 'Mother India' in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of India and Pakistan's independence. A fifteen minute preview with live music by DJ Tigerstyle was presented to an audience of 85 potential sponsors. By all accounts it went down very well and there are many interested parties waiting to get involved and show their support.

Throughout this year I've been working in various capacities with Brighton Hip Hop Festival. One of the projects was 'Frieze Box', a mobile public art installation designed to bring the work of emerging visual artists into the public arena. We built a huge canvas wrapped box which the invited artists came and painted in rotation over a 2 week period. Positioned outside the public library in Jubilee Square, Brighton it benefited from the vast amount of foot traffic passing through the area on a daily basis. Although stressfull at times and realised with next to no budget, the project was a considerable success and has inspired lots of ideas for future endeavours.

Frieze Box would not have been possible without the support of Indy Hunjan - KALA PHOOL, Kevin DaCosta, Richard Nutbourne - Coolflight, Flint Hire & Supply, Brighton & Hove City Council, Jubilee Library, the BHHF07 volunteer squad, all the artists who participated for free in often adverse weather conditions and most of all, my partner in crime for this project the omnipresent Sri McKinnon.

You can check out some pics of the project at the Frieze Box Flickr site.
